This one-of-a-kind stroll along the Riverwalk in Downtown Wilmington is a show-stopper that is a distinct attraction in and of itself. The boardwalk is a mile long and next to  the Cape Fear River waterfront, the views of the river are beautiful and its easy to  access to some of many other attractions from here. The riverwalk was created to help tourism in the downtown area of Wilmington.

Visitors will be hard pressed to leave the scenic wooden walkway, which is bordered by some of Wilmington’s most prestigious buildings as well as miles of open water views. Wilmington landmarks such as the Cotton Exchange, the USS North Carolina Battleship, and the 1914 Murchison Building are all located along the route, though.

The Riverwalk has been the inspiration of many art pieces, which show a mix of pastel-colored  historic structures and stores. There are quite a few tours to help you discover, are dedicated to exploring this one-mile stretch of land both boat and land tours are available.

A pedestrian promenade connecting bridges, specifically from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge to the Isabel Holmes Bridge, was originally envisioned as part of the Riverwalk project. With only a few of minor gaps in the path, plans are in the works to fulfill the initial aim by 2016, but in the meantime, strollers can take advantage of the infinite vistas and amusement provided by the wide promenade in the meantime.

In terms of construction, the Riverwalk is primarily made of wood, with heavy but unobtrusive concrete rails to protect walkers from falling into the water below. It runs through the heart of Wilmington’s downtown. While the Riverwalk is a popular destination for joggers and runners during the day, it is also well-lit at night thanks to ornamental hanging street lights. There are benches and embedded stools throughout the path for people who want to sit back, relax, and take in the sea breeze.

Aside from the major attractions, such as the USS North Carolina Battleship, which can’t be missed because it’s stationed along the docks, the Riverwalk also provides convenient access to some of the downtown area’s most popular businesses and restaurants.
