New Hanover County is home to the census-designated place (CDP) of Castle Hayne, which is located in the state of North Carolina, USA. The population was 1,202 at the time of the 2010 census, an increase from 1,116 at the time of the 2000 census. It is a part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area (Metro Statistical Area).

Slave labor was employed by planters and small farmers in order to make the most of the region’s natural riches. Naval stocks and lumber were two of the region’s most important industries during the 18th and much of the 19th centuries: they drove the economy before and during the American Revolution. A garrison of British soldiers was stationed at Fort Johnson near Wilmington during the American Revolutionary War.

Following their humiliating defeat at Guilford Court House, the British withdrew their entire force back to Fort Johnson and abandoned their aspirations to conquer North Carolina. This encouraged the British to launch an attack on Yorktown, Virginia, which effectively brought the war to a close.

The town was named for Captain Roger Haynes, who lived in a big home in the area. Prior to the 2011 election, there was a significant push among Castle Hayne residents to incorporate the town into a separate entity known as the Town of Castle Hayne. A prior forced annexation of Monkey Junction in 2010 and a potential forced annexation of Ogden in 2011 had resulted in multiple lawsuits and appeals, both of which were filed against the city of Wilmington in the aftermath.

In November 2011, the referendum for incorporation was defeated. Approximately 1,116 people, 437 households, and 312 families were counted in the CDP at the time of the 2000 census. There were 471 dwelling units at an average density of 209.3 units per square mile (80.8 units per km2) in this neighborhood.

The racial makeup of the CDP was as follows: 81.54 percent white, 14.78 percent African American, 0.99 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.99 percent from other races, and 1.43 percent from two or more races; 0.99 percent from other races and 1.43 percent from two or more races Hispanic or Latino people of any race accounted for 1.79 percent of the population in 2010. According to Census 2000, 17.4 percent of the population was of Irish, 14.8 percent English, 7.3 percent United States or American, 5.7 percent Scots-Irish, 5.6 percent Sub-Saharan African, 5.1 percent German, and 5.0 percent French ancestry, with 5.7 percent Scots-Irish and 5.6 percent Sub-Saharan African ancestry.

There were 437 households, 34.1 percent of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0 percent of which were married couples living together, 15.6 percent of which had a female householder who was not her husband’s present, and 28.6 percent of which were non-family households. Individuals constituted 22.0 percent of all households, with 6.4 percent consisting only of people 65 years of age or older, according to the Census Bureau. There were 2.55 people living in the average household, and 2.96 people living in the average family.
